Highway code: Rude drivers can get £100 fine and 3 points under little known rule

Unfortunately, Britain's roads have no shortage of drivers who see driving into puddles and splashing pedestrians on the side of the road as some kind of fun pastime. It certainly isn't fun, however, if you're the one getting splashed.

But many motorists who get a cheap laugh out of splashing unsuspecting pedestrians in rainy conditions have found that it's actually no laughing matter at all. Splashing pedestrians can be an offence that carries with it a very heavy penalty.

Whether done with malicious intent or not, drivers who splash pedestrians could face punishment for careless and inconsiderate driving.

Drivers must take great care to avoid puddles near bus shelters and pedestrianised areas in order to avoid getting into trouble with the law.

If they are considered to be guilty of driving in a way that amounts to a 'clear act of incompetence, selfishness, impatience or aggressiveness,' they could face a £100 fine and three points on the licence.

However, in extreme cases, fines for splashing pedestrians can rise as high as £5,000.
